Biography

Sara Huxley-Edwards graduated from Birmingham Polytechnic in 1986 with a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art Textiles and continued her study in Manchester gaining a P.G.C.E in 1988.

She then embarked upon a teaching career where she quickly became an examiner for edexcel board and has for the past twelve years been Head of Textiles at a Birmingham College.

Towards the end of last year, the waiting list for commissioned pieces of her work had become so long that she decided the time had come to give up her teaching commitments and set up as a full time professional artist.

She says of her work that her abiding passion is for texture and colour, rich elements to add to any environment, creating warmth and interest.

Her paintings are often large-scale, averaging 4ft square and are semi-abstract images. She is interested in trying to create the excitement and feeling of the subject. For instance, she say's of the painting entitled "Peaches and Cream", (pictured) that she wanted to capture the ambience of a dinner party, after which all the guests are happy and relaxed. The different angles of the ellipses and overlapping shapes represent the movement of time throughout the evening after which you are left with empty vessels and satisfied friends.

Statement

My work is primarily concerned with texture and colour. I work predominantly in mixed media and enjoy experimenting with and building up layers, often with gold leaf or metallic textures breaking through. I often use words in creating my artwork and believe that words and art used together provoke a powerful response in the onlooker, stimulating an evocative train of thought.

My visual inspiration is drawn from such diverse sources as architecture in which I have an abiding interest, to aerial photography which I am drawn to because of its abstract qualities. The structure of buildings and the shapes and spaces inherent in their creation can provide strong abstract images and contrasts of tones and texture in contrast to the random, organic patterns found in nature.

I have been selling both my paintings and fine art textile pieces for 20 years and have been teaching both disciplines for over 15 years, most recently as Head of Textiles at a college in Birmingham since 1993. I was also an appointed art examiner for Edexcel board for 5 years.

At Christmas 2004, I handed in my notice in order to become a full time professional artist, as I could no longer keep up with the number of requests for commissions I was receiving.
